MLB roundup June 20, 2022: Gerrit Cole didn’t give the Rays a chance

Gerrit Cole was dominant on the mound and the New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Monday night.

It’s the 50th win of the season for the Yankees, who have won 17 of their last 19 games.

Cole came very close to a game without a run or hit, but he finally gave in on the first pitch of the eighth inning, past Isaac Paredes. He finally allowed a single hit, an earned run and had 12 strikeouts in seven and a third innings.

Aaron Hicks broke the 2-2 tie in the ninth by hitting a triple into right field, pushing Josh Donaldson home. On the sequence, Manuel Margot ran into the fence trying to catch the ball. Injured, he was escorted off the field in a cart. Jose Trevino then put the finishing touches on a sacrifice fly.

Anthony Rizzo opened the scoring for New Yorkers by hitting his 19th homer of the campaign in the first inning at the expense of Shane McClanahan. Then the New Yorkers took advantage of an error by first baseman Ji-Man Choi in the seventh inning, a 45th unearned run for the Rays this season, which is a major league record.

Clay Holmes (5-0) squandered a 2-0 lead and allowed his first run since Opening Day, ending a 31 1/3 inning streak, but Hicks saved the day.
