Meaztegi Golf to host the Bizkaia PGAe Open

The golf course Meaztegi hosted this Tuesday the presentation of the first edition of the tournament Bizkaia PGAe Openwhich will be part of PGA circuit and that will be scored for the world ranking. The open, which will be held from September 12 to 17, will be attended by “the best national golfers and a representation of international players”, as indicated Imanol Pradalesregional deputy of Infrastructures and Territorial Development, with an estimate of about 140 players in total.

The tournament will be part of the six scoring events of the PGA in the State, just the year that the Circuit of the Association of Golf Professionals of Spain is celebrating his 50th anniversary. For Bizkaia, this golf competition will mean that it will become the most important organized in this century. The regional official has highlighted the international projection that will be achieved with a sporting event that is expected to raise up to half a million euros: “Thousands of people are going to see us in many parts of the world.”

At the same time as this competition, a Pro-Am tournament, in which amateur golfers will have the opportunity to compete with professional players. This tournament, which will also have a solidarity purpose, will serve to remember the figure of the recently deceased Carlos Cellesone of the pioneers of golf in Spain, based in Bizkaia since 1960 and one of the founders of the PGA.

GOLF IN BIZKAIA, ON THE RISE

Charles Rockmanaging director of Meaztegi Golf, has underlined that this tournament will be a before and after for the field since its foundation, in 2005. But the truth is that golf, at least in Meaztegi, has experienced growth since 2019, with a 28.2% increase in subscribers, thus approaching 900, and a 35% increase in outings, with which is expected to exceed 50,000 this yearaccording to data provided by Pradales.

The field occupies 88 hectares and has a golf course 18 holes with a tour of 6.154 metroswhere the pair is 72, and which has a total of 52 bunkers. Within the facilities there is another nine-hole, par-3 course with 10 bunkers, as well as a practice area with a double-height tee, two putting-greens and a chipping area. the legendary golfer Severiano Ballesteros was the one who designed the field, and the Biscay Provincial Council is the owner of the facility.
