The Mercedes team made a lot of noise again in Canada. The performance on track was certainly not bad, Lewis Hamilton was third and George Russell fourth, but they were also heard off the track. It had to do with the measures announced by the FIA to prevent porpoising.
Mercedes has been seriously troubled by the bump all season. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and his drivers called on the FIA to intervene. Hamilton and Russell, for example, complained about dangerous situations and physical discomfort. On Thursday evening came the statement from the FIA which also indicated that teams would install a second metal support to the floor. For many teams there was not enough time to do this, except for Mercedes.
To the horror of the other teams, Mercedes appeared on track on Friday with a second prop. A protest threatened and Mercedes quickly removed the second support. Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko expressed his annoyance to Motorsport.com: “I was very surprised when I saw that floor with the second support. When the technical directive came out it was clear that there was not enough time to do this” One part. So yes..” Marko then responds clearly to a suggestion about insider knowledge: “Otherwise you can’t explain what happened.”
