Magic drafts Banchero as 1st pick in the NBA draft

The Orlando Magic drafted Duke freshman Paolo Banchero with the first pick in the NBA draft on Thursday.

After leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final season, the 6-foot-6 forward was first mentioned by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, besting fellow first-year forward Jabari Smith. Jr. and Chet Holmgren.

Banchero, who wore a glittery purple suit, received a standing ovation inside the Barclays Center, where Dike lost the final of the ACC Tournament.

The Magic picked first for the fourth time and have done well the previous few times. He drafted Shaquille O’Neal in 1992, traded the rights to Chris Webber for Penny Hardaway the following year, and opted for Dwight Howard in 2004.

They all eventually reached the NBA Finals with the Magic.
