It is the charity gala that Javier Martínez Larrañaga, from the Inveready group, from San Sebastian, has organized year after year together with Gonzalo Pardo Iturregi. In each edition the reason is a different one. On this occasion, the fight against ALS, led by the Luzon Foundation, which works to improve the quality of life of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and find a cure by promoting research.

The proceeds from this meeting, which will be held this Wednesday afternoon at the Iturregi hotel in Getaria (7:00 p.m.), with more than two hundred guests, will go to the fight against this disease that affects 4,000 people in Spain, a misleading number because three cases a day are detected and three people die daily.

Determined to give visibility to this disease and to denounce the difficulties faced by those who suffer from it, the former goalkeeper of Osasuna and former coach of Celta, among other teams, Juan Carlos Unzué, will be present at this gala. Since his ALS was detected, he has participated in different events to give voice to those affected. This Wednesday he will do it again. With the aim, as he often says, that what happened to him doesn’t happen to people: facing a disease that he was almost unaware of.

The long-distance swimmer from San Sebastian, Jaime Caballero, is another of the culprits that people from football with the same objective are present in Getaria. Arconada, Zubizarreta and Biurrun will support Unzué in an afternoon-evening in which it is intended to raise no less than 20,000 euros in the raffle that will be held for desserts. The gala will be presented by actress Maribel Salas.

The organizer, Javier Martínez, is hopeful that the Getaria gala will be a turning point. «We have a good ‘feeling’. People are becoming more aware and we know that all help is little for those who suffer from diseases such as ALS.

Soccer people such as Iñaki Ibáñez, Miguel Santos, Fran Garagarza or Xabier Eskurza, among others, have confirmed their presence this Wednesday in Getaria.
