Jabeur joins Bencic in Berlin final

Ons Jabeur beat young Coco Gauff in the semi-finals and will face Belinda Bencic, who broke away from Maria Sakkari, in the final on Sunday.

The Swiss Belinda Bencic, Olympic champion and 17th in the world, will challenge the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, world No.4, in the final of the WTA tournament in Berlin on grass on Sunday.

In top form, Jabeur, who in May became the first Arab and African player to win a WTA 1000 in Madrid, edged 18-year-old American Coco Gauff 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the semi-finals.

After a tight first set, Jabeur won the tie-break 7-4, and then did not release the pressure on the recent Roland Garros finalist (13th), who never returned to the match.

«Coco played with a lot of power, I couldn’t put that power down, so I tried to play my game, place my shots“commented Jabeur, author of several finely placed points along the lines.

«I came here with no big expectations but I’m the number one seed so I’m trying to play my best tennisadded the 27-year-old, supported by Tunisian supporters in all the tournaments on the circuit where she plays. “It helps me a lot, she said, everywhere I play they support me, they chant my name, it’s like a big family.»

Jabeur, who will play his seventh final on the WTA circuit on Sunday, will try to snatch his third title after Madrid this year and Birmingham in 2021.

Facing her, the Swiss Bencic won her ticket to the final by beating the Greek Maria Sakkari (6th) 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4.

Already a 25-year-old winner of six titles on the main circuit, including the Olympic gold medal last summer in Tokyo, Bencic is also at the height of her career. She won this season the WTA 500 in Charleston, USA.
