Isere. 530 years since the first ascent of Mont Aiguille: two days of celebration

On June 25 and 26, a great medieval festival will be organized in Chichilianne to celebrate the first ascent of Mont Aiguille, in 1492. That year, Antoine de Ville reached the summit of “Mont inaccessible”, emblem of Trièves. A daring adventure considered the birth of mountaineering.

In order to mark this 530e anniversary, the whole village of Chichilianne mobilized and it is an immersion in the year 1492 to which he invites the public. During the weekend, in Donières, the base camp of Antoine de Ville will be reconstituted (from 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Conferences, farmers’ market, exhibitions…

The villagers will walk around in period costumes that they themselves made under the leadership of the association “Vie de village tourisme Chichilianne an 1492”. Stéphane Gal, historian-scientist, brought his expertise so that hats and outfits are faithful to the time. The latter will also provide conferences (5 p.m. Saturday, 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday) on the project he led: reconstructing the first ascent of Mont Aiguille. It was he again who notably crossed the Alps in armor in order to experience the same effort as the 40,000 soldiers of François Iis who, in 1515, traveled to Marignan in Italy.

On the sidelines of the market for producers and craftsmen, several exhibitions will be brought together: one scientific by Stéphane Gal, others photographic but also one devoted to military mountaineering with the presence of the 27e BIM. The reconstructions of the Compagnie des Etats du Velay and the archers of the Brame-Farine company as well as the Archers of Mont Aiguille will enliven the square. Medieval songs, archery tournaments, horse training demonstrations are also on the program. With attention to detail, the menu will also be medieval.
