Hugo Gaston beaten by Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of Wimbledon

Hugo Gaston couldn’t do anything against Lorenzo Sonego this Thursday at Wimbledon and was beaten in the second round (7-6 [4], 6-4, 6-4). It took 2h11 and a score almost acquired for the Frenchman to finally get his first break point on the service of Lorenzo Sonego. He converted her but it was already much too late. More punchy, more decisive, the Italian then led two sets to nil and 4-1, double break, an almost crippling lead at this level.

Hugo Gaston pushed his luck to create a second break chance but Sonego coolly erased it with an ace. He won this service game (5-3), then the match, in 2h30. As in Australia, then at Roland-Garros, here he is in the third round, where he will face the winner of Nadal-Berankis.

More than his 37 winning shots, it was the ability of the Italian to firmly hold his commitments that made the difference (only 3 break points, only one break allowed). The second set could even have been more expeditious, since Gaston had to save a double break point (at 4-2), then two set points (at 5-3). Qualified for the 3rd round at Roland-Garros (beaten by Holger Rune), the Frenchman stopped a round earlier at Wimbledon.
