HSV: career killer! Woe to you, you become a coach in the Volkspark… – 2. Bundesliga

In this millennium, 21 head coaches tried to work successfully at HSV. A few with success. Many with brief and inadequate performances. What connects everyone: Nobody is currently training in the Bundesliga. Career killer HSV!

Some examples.

► Since Thorsten Fink (54), no coach in the Volkspark has been so successful. The ex-professional led Hamburg to a good 7th place in 2013, only just missing out on the European Cup. After HSV, Fink toured the world (APOEL Nicosia, Austria Vienna, Grasshoppers Zurich, Vissel Kobe, FC Riga and now with Al-Nasr/Dubai). But Fink didn’t get another chance in the Bundesliga.

► Joe Zinnbauer (52) worked successfully at FC St. Gallen and at Orlando Pirates in South Africa after leaving Hamburg in 2015. Now the football teacher is hoping for a new job on the sidelines.

► Bruno Labbadia (56) saved HSV from relegation in an almost hopeless situation in 2015, one season later he ended up in a respectable tenth place with Hamburg. Then it took the former top clipper to Wolfsburg and Hertha. He is currently waiting for a suitable offer.

► Shortly after the Russians invaded Ukraine in February, Markus Gisdol (52) left Lok Moscow after almost four months. After leaving HSV in 2018, Gisdol only looked after 1. FC Köln.

► The seven games in 2018 for Bernd Hollerbach (52) at HSV were a time to forget. After that, the former defender worked successfully at Royal Excel Mouscron and currently at VV St. Truiden.

► Christian Titz (51) flew as the first second division coach of HSV in autumn 2018, then trained Rot-Weiss Essen and has just moved up to the 2nd division with 1. FC Magdeburg.

► Titz successor Hannes Wolf (41) had to pack his bags after missing out on promotion in 2019, then worked for KRC Genk (Belgium), the DFB U18, Bayer Leverkusen and is now a trainer for Germany’s U19.

► Dieter Hecking (57) is currently taking a break as a coach, is the sports director of 1. FC Nürnberg. At HSV, the veteran coach missed the resurgence with the Hamburgers in 2020.

► Daniel Thioune (47) also failed to make the HSV return to the upper house and was fired three games before the end of 2021. Now the ex-professional seems to have found happiness at Fortuna Düsseldorf. First Thioune saved the club from relegation, then he led the Rhinelanders to a decent 10th place, losing only one of his 13 games with Fortuna so far. 2-0 at FC St. Pauli on the last matchday.
