Hockey professional Sturm before winning the Stanley Cup

Dhe German ice hockey professional Nico Sturm is about to win the Stanley Cup. The 27-year-old and his Colorado Avalanche won game four of the finals series at the defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 after overtime and now has three match points. In the best-of-seven series, the Sturm team leads 3-1, one win is still missing to win the title.

Storm played a big part in Colorado’s success. A deflected shot by Augsburg made it 2-2 in the final period and only brought the Avalanche into overtime. At first, Sturm was even awarded the goal before it was credited to Andrew Cogliano.

Nazem Kadri scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute of overtime. “That was a huge victory,” said Kadri. “It’s a great feeling. I’ve waited my whole life for this.”

Storm was on the ice for a little over eight minutes in total. With the recent victory, he could already be the fifth German to win the most coveted ice hockey trophy in the world on Saturday night (02:00 a.m. CEST, live on ProSieben MAXX and ran.de). The game then rises in front of home fans in the Ball Arena in Denver.

The Avalanche, who defeated the Nashville Predators (4-0), the St. Louis Blues (4-2) and the Edmonton Oilers with Leon Draisaitl (4-0) in the play-offs, are contesting for the third time NHL finals. They won the title in 1996 and 2001 respectively.

Sturm, who was transferred to Denver from Minnesota Wild three months ago, is now the eighth German to aim for the Stanley Cup. 26 years after Uwe Krupp, who won the title with Colorado in 1996, he could follow in his footsteps. After Krupp, Dennis Seidenberg was successful with the Boston Bruins in 2011, Tom Kühnhackl in 2016 and 2017 with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philipp Grubauer in 2018 with the Washington Capitals.
