Herman improves Belgian hour record for people over 80: “I had an incredibly dry mouth” | Remarkable

The 80-year-old Herman Derdin has ridden 37 kilometers and 793 meters in one hour at the Eddy Merckx cycling track in Ghent. As a result, he can now call himself the Belgian hour record holder for people over 80.

It was warm on the Eddy Merckx cycling track when Herman Derdin started his hour record attempt.

Not ideal conditions for Derdin, who was soon on track for the Belgian hour record.

After an hour of grinding laps, 37 kilometers and 793 meters were on his counter. More than 700 meters better than the previous Belgian record.

Secretly Derdin also dreamed of the world record (39 kilometers and 3 meters). But that was never the case today.

I haven’t had a beer for 12 weeks. That’s why I immediately wanted to drink a Grimbergen after the arrival.

“The first 20 minutes it was very hot”, Derdin reacted after his record. “I had a dry mouth, really unbelievable.”

“I thought, ‘If it stays that way, it won’t work, but then it started to get better.'”

Derdin treated himself to a Grimbergen after the finish. “I haven’t drunk beer for 12 weeks. Plaice, hey”, concluded the new record holder.
