Now it’s official. After weeks of waiting, the national team was definitively excluded from the next World Cup in Qatar.

The national team has been officially excluded from the next World Cup in Qatar. The play-off was a real sentence for the national team which, 90 minutes from the dream, had to say goodbye to a historic qualification.

The qualification challenge was unique in its kind: two Nationals, from two continents and different Confederations, battled each other to snatch the last available pass for Qatar 2022.

The next 32 participants in the World Cup in Qatar were therefore sanctioned tonight, despite some situations that have created quite a few controversies.

World Cup 2022: last participant defined

Costa Rica qualified for the next World Cup in Qatar, beating New Zealand in the play-off. “The Ticos” they therefore obtained another qualification for a World Championship, the sixth in their history after their debut in Italy ’90.

Huge disappointment, however, for the New Zealand coach Danny Hay who had to surrender to the quality of the Costa Rican national team. The “all whites” therefore missing the third consecutive qualification to a World Cup, after having participated for the last time in 2010, in South Africa.

Costa Rica 1-0 New Zealand: Campbell decides

Al Ar.Rayyan Stadium in Qatar, Costa Rica beats New Zealand 1 to 0 and qualifies for the next World Cup, thus excluding the Oceanic national team from the competition. On the pitch many well-known faces of European football, including Chris Wood (Newcastle), Bryan Ruiz (ex Sporting Lisbon), Oscar Duarte (Levante), but to decide it is the seventh scorer in the history of “La Sele”, old acquaintance of the Italian championship: Joel Campbell.

The goal of the former Frosinone striker still writes a page in the history of Costa Rican football. After Costa Rica achieved a historic quarter-final in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with his goals, eliminating Italy from the groups, Joel Campbell allowed his national team to participate in the third consecutive edition of a World Championship.
