Gold and silver for Mª José Mompó, from Xàtiva Badminton, in the Guadarrama tournament

Xàtiva Mª Club Badminton athlete José Mompó won two medals, one gold and one silver, in the Top TTR Senior tournament played last saturday in Guadarrama (Madrid)). The setabense got the women’s doubles gold, in which he formed a couple with Silvia Rueda, and in which they started as number one seed. After getting through the group phase without problems, in the semifinals they beat Madrid’s Diana Iglesias and Laura Jiménez 21-11 and 21-14. In the final they also faced a couple from Madrid, Patricia Sánchez and Vanessa Serrano, who were beaten 23-21 and 21-13.

Mª José also participated in the individual test, in which got the silver. The one from CB Xàtiva passed the group stage, qualifying as first in the group and in the semifinals they beat Laura Jiménez in a tough three-set match, 21-17, 13-21 and 21-12. In the final, against Vanessa Serrano, the Setabense fell 21-15 and 21-11. A great Mompó tournament, which in a month and a half will participate in the Senior European Championship together with Carlos Martínez.

Xàtiva Badminton expanded the medal table last weekend, with the two bronzes achieved by the player of German origin and who plays for the Setabense club, Thomas Wandschneider, en el Yonex Canada Para-Badminton International 2022, which was played throughout the past week in Ottawa. Thomas participated in the men’s singles and men’s doubles, alongside Rick Cornell.

In individual WH1, Thomas, due to his condition as number one seed, went directly to the semifinals, where he met the Korean Jeong Jaegun, against whom he was about to force the third set, but lost 21-14 and 21-17, thus hanging the bronze. The same metal was achieved in the doubles, where, together with Rick, they made it through the group stage with two wins and one loss. In the semifinals they came across one of the powerful couples of the Korean delegation, the one formed by Jeong Jaegun and Kim Jung Jun, who beat the Germans 9-21, 21-13 and 21-17, thus staying with the bronze.

On the other hand, The Municipal Sports School of Badminton held the Closing Tournament 2022 last Wednesday, that put an end to the activity of the course 21-22. The event was attended by athletes who throughout this course have trained in the EDM and invited players from CB Xàtiva. They held a singles competition and a round of doubles matches. Some twenty athletes participated and put into practice the technical and tactical knowledge acquired. After the day, the diplomas were handed out by coach Javier Alcázar.

Concentration selections

On Monday, the final list of athletes who will participate in the Spanish Championship of Regional Teams and the club Badminton Xàtiva will be represented, as Jesús Cimas has been called up for the U-17 team. Also, as first reserves are Andrea Orquín and Marcos Cimas, which have been very close to direct access. The list has been published after the preparatory concentration for this national championship to be held in Santander from June 23 to 26, a concentration that took place last Saturday at the Alacant Sports Technification Center. The three from Setabenses participated in this event, in which those summoned worked under the orders of the coaches Sergi Llopis (under-15) and Iván Gallardo (under-17), carrying out various tests and combinations in order to draw up the possible line-ups in the National Championship.

Upcoming competitions

Athletes from the Xàtiva Badminton Club will play next Saturday the Manises Top TTR tournamentintended for the lower categories (under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19).
