Girona is in 15th place in the historical ACB ranking with 731 matches

Gironaby the hand of the ancient Akasvayu, remains a historic place in the Endesa ACB league even though it’s been 14 years since that project disappeared. Three days after a possible return of the city to the elite of men’s basketball by the club founded by Marc Gasol in 2014, the 731 games played in the highest category by CB Girona have placed him ranked 15th in the ACB rankings. And if we pay attention to the matches won (330), 3 places would go up in the standings to be twelfth. Of the 14 clubs that appear ahead of Akasvayu in the number of matches played, only Estudiantes (rival to the Final Four) and Valladolid do not currently compete in the Endesa league. The schoolchildren are looking to return to the elite a year after losing the category, while the Valladolid project collapsed and now the Castilian city, like Girona, has a team in the LEB Or, in its case, with the support of football, which has precisely managed to return to Primera.

CB Girona played 20 seasons in a row at the ACB since the start of the 1988/89 campaign with Gavaldà as coach. That season the category was lost but it could be maintained with the purchase of the remaining place due to the merger of Granollers and the IFA Espanyol. At that time, the team always ended up saving the category, at least, despite suffering bravely in the play-offs of permanence of 1994 (Huesca) and 1995 (Breogán), in a newly inaugurated Fontajau.

Now the city, with the help of Bàsquet Girona, is two wins away from returning to the ACB, in one Final Four which will be resolved this weekend with the advantage of playing it at home. First they will have to beat Lleida in the semifinals, and then, in a hypothetical final, the winner of Estudiantes-Palencia. If Girona is a historic place in the ACB, what about the Madrid team, which ranks fourth in the historical ranking (1,991 matches) only surpassed by Real Madrid, Barça and Joventut.

In this historical classification of the Endesa League, the 76 clubs that have been part of the category appear, either as ACB or as First Division. Of the four teams that will play the Final Four of the LEB in search of promotion one, the Estudiantes, is historic of the highest category. Meanwhile, Girona and Lleida, with different clubs, are looking to return. The capital of Segrià, with the old Plus Pujol, appears in the 50th place of the ranking with 140 matches played in the elite. Palencia, meanwhile, have never played.

In case of promotion, Bàsquet Girona would count from zero in the ACB’s historical ranking because it is a new club, created in 2014, which has nothing to do with the old CB Girona (which competed by relating the name to brands such as Valvi, Casademont and Akasvayu). In any case, the city would once again add matches to the highest category of men’s basketball, where 14 years after its disappearance, it remains one of the main references in history.
