Italy suffered a painful defeat in Germany in the Nations League, forcing it to relinquish its lead in the group to Hungary. A new blow for the Azzurri, who previously missed the World Cup in Qatar.

Italy had hoped to clean up its tarnished reputation in the Nations League after missing out on the World Cup, but the reverse happened at the Mönchengladbach stadium.

After 70 minutes, the 5-0 forfeit score was on the board, after a typical German display: deadly efficient and without mercy for the opponent.

National coach Roberto Mancini began to shrivel more and more in his Italian suit with every goal against. The 2 late goals against, from Gnonto and Bastoni, were only a small consolation.
