Sprinter Alexandra Burghardt draws both composure and motivation from Olympic silver in the bobsleigh.

“On the one hand, I now have the necessary rest. On the other hand, of course, it all spurs me on even more because it’s really fun now,” said the track and field athlete from LG Wacker Burghausen. At the German championships in Berlin, Burghardt is aiming for tickets for the World Cup from July 15th to 24th in the USA and the European Championships from August 15th to 21st in Munich, despite problems in the preparation.

After her season debut in Munich at the end of May, when she sprinted 11.38 seconds in bad weather, the 28-year-old was unable to train as planned due to muscular problems. She had to cancel her starts at the competitions in Rabat and Regensburg. In the DM week she finally returned to the track in spikes. She is currently sixth in the German best-of-year list, led by Gina L├╝ckenkemper with 11.04 seconds.

Last year’s German doubles champion caused a stir in the winter when she started at the Winter Games in Beijing six months after the Summer Games in Tokyo. There she won silver as a brakewoman in the two-man bobsled by pilot Mariama Jamanka.

“If for some reason my career were over tomorrow, I think I could end it with a smile – and that wouldn’t have been the case before Braunschweig,” said Burghardt. In Braunschweig she had won the German championship titles over 100 and 200 meters last year.
