French Open 2022: Casper Ruud beats Holger Rune in the quarterfinals – he sends his mother away

Norway’s newly promoted Casper Ruud and Croatian veteran Marin Cilic complete the semi-finals of the French Open. The 23-year-old Ruud prevailed in the round of eight against the surprise Danish player Holger Rune 6: 1, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 3 and now meets Cilic on Friday.

The 19-year-old Rune missed the chance to become the youngest semi-finalist at a Grand Slam since Rafael Nadal won Roland Garros in 2005.

The 33-year-old Cilic had previously beaten the Russian Andrey Rublev 5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 4, 3: 6, 7: 6 (10: 2) and is aiming for another eight years after his triumph in New York Coup at a Grand Slam tournament.

Eighth seeded Ruud, who was the first Norwegian to reach a quarterfinal in a major tournament, converted his second match point in the night session after 3:15 hours. Ruud’s father Christian had reached at least the third round of the French Open twice (1995, 1999).

“It’s a big day for Norwegian tennis,” said Ruud junior, also thinking of his compatriot Ulrikke Eikeri, who had previously reached the mixed final at Roland-Garros with Joran Vliegen (Belgium).

Meanwhile, Munich winner Rune caused a strange scene when he loudly sent his own mother out of the box in the third set. “He still has to learn to keep his emotions under control,” criticized ex-finalist Alex Corretja Eurosport: “You don’t send your mother out of the box. That’s unacceptable.”

During the handshake after the match point, Ruud shook his head at such boorish behavior. “It was freezing,” said ex-pro Tim Henman Eurosport.

Ruud later praised the 19-year-old hothead: “He has improved a lot. He will be a dangerous opponent for many years to come.” However, the Norwegian kept his nerve in the fourth duel between the two “hard hitters” and is now in a major semi-final for the first time.

“The long wait for the match to start got on my nerves,” said Ruud: “I started well, after that it was a really tough match. The pressure was on me. He had a lot to win after beating Tsitsipas and nothing to gain to lose.”

So far, Miami finalist Ruud had only reached the second week of the tournament at the Australian Open 2021. Rune had failed in the first round of his only two previous Grand Slam participations at the US Open 2021 and the Australian Open 2022.
