“For me it was a mistake. And not for the reason everyone thinks”

Today on better terms with KD after a rather difficult departure from Golden State, Draymond Green explained to Colin Herd that he immediately viewed the winger’s choice to leave the Bay Area as a mistake. And not necessarily for the reasons we imagine.

“He’s my brother, I always want to see him succeed, whether it’s here in Brooklyn or whether he decides to play for Barcelona in the Euroleague next year. I still want to see him succeed, because this bond, this relationship that we have, it will always go beyond basketball. Whether he’s in our team or not, I can’t care, because it’s not up to me. What I can say is that when he decided he was going to leave, for me it was a mistake. And not for the reason everyone thinks. I thought it was a mistake because I know Kevin. Basketball is not the most important thing for me in my life. I’m not going to lie and tell you that it is. It’s not the most important thing in my life. It is extremely important. But that’s not the most important thing.

But for Kevin it’s 100% the most important thing in his life. It’s the thing he cares about the most in the world. And when Kevin was there, the situation allowed him to just go play basketball, which he likes to do. It wasn’t the fact that he was going to play with Kyrie. There were no ‘Oh, Kyrie’s not here’ around. Nothing of that. So the reason I thought it was a mistake was not the titles. It was more from the point of view of life itself. I care about the person. The basketball player I don’t care, it’s him as the person I care about. And I knew what made him happy was just being able to go play basketball. This is where the mistake was made for me. It’s not that he wasn’t going to win, because there’s no evidence that they’re not going to win, it takes time to build those things. But whether it was a failure or a success, the error was not there for me. »
