Football Champions League – Amazon vs Canal+, frontal war on the Champions League

It is this Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., that UEFA will receive the financial offers from the channels and platforms to obtain the rights to the C1 between 2024 and 2027.

A battle eagerly awaited by the European body, which offers a new Champions League formula, with more matches, and even meetings on Thursday at the start of the competition. Always more matches for always more money, this is the creed of the European body, which is not afraid of losing its audience in this new complex formula and is convinced of being able to make a real jackpot with the TV rights.

Especially in France where the war is total. Canal +, which intends to quickly abandon Ligue 1 despite its forced contract with the LFP still in progress, wants to keep its flagship competition, which attracts 1.6 million viewers on average. In addition, the encrypted channel has an advantage in being able to go all out, since RMC generally buys back the rights from it a posteriori to be able to broadcast the meetings, and therefore pays part of the investment made directly to the encrypted channel. But competition from Amazon, which has decided to invest in the French and European market, will be closely monitored, announces L’Equipe. The American giant has an appetite, and could well recover some Champions League posters.

BeIN Sports and RMC withdraw from big offers

Behind, BeIN Sports will try to keep its current lot, with all the Champions League matches without the French clubs, and therefore all the same some good posters. Other surprises could come. If RMC should not get involved in the fight, DAZN has European ambitions and is developing a lot in Germany or in the Women’s Champions League. Apple TV is starting to arrive in football, in the United States for the moment, but does not plan to invest in Europe yet. This could be the case for Discovery, via Eurosport, although that still seems fair for this year. The duel will therefore mainly oppose Canal + to Amazon, for a fight that UEFA hopes to be muscular in order to make the most of it over the next few years of C1.
