Foot – Girona FC returns to La Liga after its authoritarian success in Tenerife (1-3)

Three years later, Girona FC is back in La Liga. The Catalan club won the accession play-offs after their success in Tenerife (1-3).

Held in check last week at Montilivi (0-0), the Catalans of Girona FC achieved the feat of winning in Tenerife this Sunday evening (1-3). Girona sees itself propelled into La Liga, three years after experiencing the throes of the descent.

It took a goal from the inevitable Stuani from the penalty spot (42) then one against his side from a player from the Canary Islands (70) and finally the coup de grace delivered by Arnau (80). After two cruel disappointments in the last two seasons (against Elche and Rayo Vallecano), Girona is once again entitled to happiness.

The Miracle Year

It is the first time in its history that Girona manages to climb in La Liga via the accession play-offs. This climb remains a miracle, Girona having finished in 6th and last qualifying place on special goal difference. Then they dismissed the ultra favorite Eibar and finally Tenerife who had beaten the Catalans twice this season.

As during the first climb, the club will have to reinvent itself in depth. Not necessarily brilliant and suffering for a large part of the season, the workforce will have to be reinforced while the stadium will again undergo a major facelift to welcome the stars of La Liga, from the prestigious neighbor of FC Barcelona to the European champion in Real Madrid title.

Girona in La Liga is also good news for the Pyrénées-Orientales department since the club has many supporters and local partners who will have one of the best championships in the world less than an hour’s drive away.

Basketball is also rising in the elite

Note that the happiness of the Gironins is total this Sunday since, a little earlier in the day, Marc Gasol’s basketball team had also won the rise to the national elite.
