Eleven countries participate in the inauguration of the Road to Santiago program with a view to the Parapan American Games

The Road to Santiago program began its training workshops with a view to the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. The great event of continental Paralympic sport will take place from November 17 to 26 next year.

With eighty representatives from eleven countries and nine institutions involved, the Road to Santiago program was launched, financed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), which seeks to develop the Parapan American Games through the training of coaches, judges, sports classifiers and paraathletes, who in turn will be the ones who will work in the various disciplines that will be in Santiago 2023.

The Parapan American Games will take place from November 17 to 26 next year, and with this focus, the opening day of the program was held at the facilities of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences, with the presence of authorities and representatives of the Paralympic world.

It was the first of the three sessions included in this workshop, focused on judo and paracycling. In addition, the dynamic included visits to the field with practical foundations, which allowed enhancing the knowledge of the attendees.

“‘This project is very important, because there are no specialized technicians, there are no classifiers in many of these countries. And this project arose with the idea of ​​generating that legacy, of strengthening the Paralympic structures”, commented José Cabo, representative of the IPC.

In turn, the director of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences and member of the Santiago 2023 board of directors, Elisa Araya, highlighted the transfer of knowledge: ”This showcase for Paralympic sport seems tremendously important to us, to see how people with disabilities and special needs can fully develop in any field, artistic or sports”.

“It is very important to show how Paralympic athletes carry out their training, compete and achieve important records,” stressed the teaching authority and hostess in this important instance for Paralympic sport.

With the presence of paraathletes from both disciplines, the trainers were able to transfer their knowledge to their coaches, providing integration and high-performance tools to promote the professional work they maintain together with the federations.

The Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games are approaching

The instance that was inaugurated this week will be very relevant in the staging of the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. This is recognized by the representative of the Chilean Paralympic Committee, Yeny Barría. “‘This is the first time that a camp like this is held in our country,” she said.

“In addition to enhancing the talents that we have within our sport, the training for coaches will also update a bit what we need to get to Santiago 2023. We need more personnel, more people who know about Paralympic sport, who know about classification, and we believe that this project is essential”, explained the leader of the National Sports Federation for people with visual disabilities.

The Road to Santiago program will have new training dates, with different representatives of the International Paralympic Committee under the motto of integrating all the disciplines that will be present in Santiago 2023. Within the program, three workshops stand out, whose final dates will be known through the channels Games officials.

This instance will include a program for paraathletics, parashooting and wheelchair rugby judges, as well as paranarating sports classifiers, and judo and paracycling coaches.
