The 60-year-old coach had already looked after the Hornets from 2013 to 2018, was then head coach of the Orlando Magic for three years and most recently an advisor to the Brooklyn Nets. He is now succeeding James Borrego, who was released in April.

“We have an exciting, young team with many talented players,” the new coach is quoted in the statement. “Charlotte is a great city. And I know from personal experience how passionate fans are about the franchise.”

General manager Mitch Kupchak said Clifford’s “past experience and coaching philosophy make him the best coach for the team” and hopes the team will take the next step.

The Hornets finished ninth in the Eastern Conference last season. In the play-in tournament, they were eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round and missed the playoffs.
