Bulgaria’s soccer team in bus accident ahead of Nations League

Dhe Bulgarian national football team was involved in a serious traffic accident on its way to the Nations League game in Georgia. Midfielder Todor Nedelew (29) suffered a traumatic brain injury that required an operation. As the Bulgarian association announced on Saturday, the operation was successful.

Nedelew, who played at FSV Mainz 05 from 2014 to 2016 and made 20 appearances in the first and second teams, will continue to be treated in the hospital. “We wish Todor a lot of strength and the best possible recovery,” said Mainz on Saturday. The Bulgarian association announced that they would be informed promptly about Nedelew’s condition. Everyone else involved in the accident is fine.

The Bulgarians’ accident happened on Friday after their arrival in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, where they will play their fourth group game on Sunday (6 p.m. on DAZN). On the way to the team hotel, the driver of the first of the two buses lost control of the vehicle, which led to the serious accident. After the collision, Nedelew was transported to a local hospital.

Bulgaria have drawn twice so far and lost the first leg at home against leaders Georgia with no points lost 5-2. National coach Jasen Petrov resigned after last Sunday’s game. The team will be looked after by sports director Georgi Ivanov on an interim basis.
