Bolivarian Games of Valledupar 2022: Venezuelans who will participate

  • The sporting event will be held from June 24 to July 5

Starting on Friday, June 24, 11 countries will participate in the 2022 Bolivarian Games in the city of Valledupar, Colombia. The Venezuelan delegation will travel with 584 athletes to the event in which there will be 45 disciplines during the 11 days of competition.

The Bolivarian Games. They are part of the events of the regional Olympic cycle that takes place every four years. The member countries are those that achieved their independence thanks to the Liberator Simón Bolívar. In addition, in each competition there are delegations that are invited.

This year the participants are Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. As guests are Guatemala, El Salvador, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic.

Of the total number of Venezuelan athletes, 294 are men and 290 women, who will participate in 44 of the 45 events, according to Mervin Maldonado, Minister of Sports.

The judoka Elvismar Rodríguez and the taekwondoka Yohandri Granado will be the Venezuelans who will be in charge of carrying the tricolor flag during the opening ceremony on June 24.

The disciplines of Valledupar 2022

Athletics, badminton, basketball, 3×3 basketball, handball, baseball, bowling, boxing, speed boating, cycling, bmx racing, mountain biking, track cycling, road cycling, equestrian, fencing and water skiing.

Also, soccer, futsal, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics, golf, judo, karate, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, open water swimming and artistic swimming.

There will also be figure skating, speed skating, water polo, rowing, rugby 7, softball, squash, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, shooting sports, triathlon, sailing, volleyball and beach volleyball.

For the Bolivarian Games, athletes who shone at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will attend. There will also be athletes who were at the Cali 2022 Junior Pan American Games.

Athletes Julio Mayora and Keydomar Vallenilla, both silver medalists at Tokyo 2020, will be representing the Venezuelan delegation in Valledupar.

The fencer and gold medalist Rubén Limardo will also be another of the Venezuelan athletes in the South American tournament.

Six athletes who were in the Cali 2021 Junior Pan American, among which the young María Yegres, in swimming, and Bryant Alamo Astudillo, in athletics, will wear the tricolor uniform.

The Venezuelan delegation is the historic leader of the Bolivarian Games medal table. Venezuelan athletes won 13 consecutive editions of this event from 1961 to 2009. In the last two editions they have been in second place, behind Colombia.

The country has also hosted the event four times. Caracas, in 1951; Maracaibo (Zulia state), in 1970 and 1989; and Barquisimeto (Lara state), in 1981.

During their last participation in Santa Marta, Colombia, they obtained second place in the medal table with 94 gold, 96 silver and 102 bronze medals for a total of 292.

In total, the Venezuelan delegation adds 1,800 gold medals, 1,487 silver and 1,109 bronze with a total of 4,396 medals throughout the history of the Bolivarian Games.
