Gavel previously trained Ulm’s farm team, the OrangeAcademy, in the third-rate ProB. So now he has been promoted to head coach, succeeding Jaka Lakovic, who left Ulm after three years for top Spanish club CB Gran Canaria.

“Anton has been with us at the club for three years now,” said Ulm’s sporting director Thorsten Leibenath, he was the “first point of contact”: “Like Jaka, Anton is a former player who played at the highest level and collected titles. Especially in relation to that in terms of credibility and imparting experience, this is an exceptionally big plus.”

Five times German champion and cup winner

The former guard Gavel played internationally for Slovakia and also for Germany, in the Bundesliga he played for Brose Bamberg and Bayern Munich for many years, was German champion five times and won the cup five times. In 2019 he began his coaching career at the OrangeAcademy, which he most recently led to the ProB play-off semi-finals.

“I will work hard to continue the constant development of basketball in Ulm,” emphasized Gavel. “The OrangeCampus offers excellent conditions for this. We play in the BBL and in the Eurocup, this challenge not only appeals to players and fans, but also to me as a coach.”
