Published

Transferred to the Denver Nuggets, Ishmael Smith is about to know his 13th employer in the North American league. No one has done better in the NBA.

Ishmael “Ish” Smith will become the sole holder of an unusual record in the NBA this fall, when he dons the uniform of the Denver Nuggets, his… thirteenth team in as many seasons played in the North American league, which has 30 franchises in total. The 33-year-old American point guard will erase his compatriots Joe Smith, Chucky Brown, Tony Massenburg and Jim Jackson, who had all played for “only” 12 NBA teams in their careers.

Since joining the pros in 2010, Smith has never played more than two consecutive seasons with the same NBA team, with the exception of the Detroit Pistons between 2016 to 2019. Passed in particular by eight franchises between 2011 and 2015, Smith was transferred six times and placed on waivers six times during his twelve years in the NBA.

Very close to the absolute record

If he plays a game with the Nuggets in the 2022-23 season, Smith will be just one team away from the record for an athlete in the four major sports leagues in North America (NBA, NHL, MLS, NFL) . The absolute record is currently held by baseball player Edwin Jackson, a member of 14 teams during his MLB career (2003-2019).

Behind Jackson, we find the US footballer Joshua Johnson, still active and who has already played for 13 NFL teams since 2008, as well as the Canadian hockey player Mike Sillinger (twelve NHL jerseys worn between 1990 and 2009).
