Badminton: Pearl – Thina, only Malaysians left standing in Jakarta

Petaling Jaya: It was an unusual setting as Pearly Tan-M. Tina stood her ground on a day when all men collided in the quarterfinals of the Indonesian Masters Tournament.

The country’s best women’s doubles duo Burleigh-Thina stormed into the semifinals with a thrilling 21-11, 21-16 win over Thailand’s Jungkulvan Kititharakul-Rawenda Pragunjai in 44 minutes at the Astura Senayan Stadium in Jakarta yesterday.

The duo’s graceful victory secured their second straight berth in this year’s semifinals after reaching the same stage at the Thailand Open last month.

The world number 10 will face local duo and Hanoi SEA Games champion Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Ramadanti for a place in his first final of the year.

“The most important thing is to keep our focus, to trust each other and also our coach,” the 22-year-old added.

“In the third match, his body was cold and his face was pale. If it wasn’t for this, I’m sure he and Aaron would have won the match.”

On Thursday, Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See withdrew from the tournament after the former also suffered from food poisoning.

World No. 5 Lee Zii Jia tasted defeat for the first time in almost three months when he lost to World No. 6 Anthony Genting of Indonesia 21-18, 16-21, 15-21 in a spirited encounter. .
