ATP Halle: Hubert Hurkacz beats Daniil Medvedev in the final and wins the title – number one in the world without a chance

It was Hurkacz’s fifth career title and first on grass. The 25-year-old feels very comfortable there, last year he reached the semi-finals in Wimbledon. In Halle he beat the strong Australian Nick Kyrgios in three sets in the semifinals and outclassed Medvedev in 63 minutes.

In Wimbledon (from June 27th) Hurkacz should be expected again, while Medvedev has to pause. Like all other Russian and Belarusian players, the 26-year-old has been banned from the All England Club over the war of aggression against Ukraine. Medvedev therefore has to concentrate on the smaller tournaments in the grass season.

In ‘s-Hertogenbosch he surprisingly lost in the final against the Dutch outsider Tim van Rijthoven, in Halle he had the title back in sight after beating Otte 7:6 (7:3), 6:3. Medvedev will get his next chance in Mallorca next week. For the time being, he does not have to worry about his lead in the ranking: his first pursuer Alexander Zverev is injured, and no world ranking points will be awarded at Wimbledon this year.
