Something for everyone: 4000 Lipsiade participants in 32 sports
Leipzig. There are about ten percent fewer starters than before the pandemic. Nevertheless, organizer Sven Heinze from the Stadtsportbund Leipzig is happy about around 4000 participants in 32 sports. Most of them had their turn this weekend, the last disciplines like judo will follow at the end of June. Some sports such as handball or volleyball have problems with young people – and were not there this year. “The fact that top athletes like Per Bittner in triathlon or national rugby player Paula Schult did the award ceremony was well received,” said Heinze.

The track and field athletes radioed SOS two days before the Lipsiade because only 14 of the 30 judges had accepted. In the end, the gap could be closed with a call for help, as with the helpers. “Nowadays you can’t get a referee who spends the whole weekend in the heat in their spare time for an apple and an egg,” said General Manager Tasso Hanke.
The track and field athletes reported a triple winner with Fanny Wegner (MoGoNo) in the eleven-year-olds. Charlotte Doberschütz (SC DHfK) comes from the successful Leipzig rowing family – the ten-year-old was in a class of her own in throwing and long jump. The sprinters Charlotte Riedel (SC DHfK) and Louis Schuster (MoGoNo) were prepared for the youth championship.

Swimming director Holger Maiwald was happy that the numbers from 2018 and 2019 were exceeded with 921 reports. Carlotta Waizmann (SSG Leipzig) and Julie König (SV Grimma) were happy about four gold medals each. The swimming day in the university hall lasted a long time from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. – in future the age groups should compete in smaller time windows.
