Kemba Walker and the Detroit Pistons have agreed to opt out of his contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The four-time All Star could be a free agent if a team does not arrive in the next 48 hours that wants to assume the year of his contract that he had yet to fulfill.
Walker has considerably lowered his market value so it seems likely that he will declare himself a free agent and suffer a substantial decrease in his contract for next season.
Walker, who had one season left at $9.2M in salary, could be an interesting player on the free-agent market for some teams looking to bolster their second unit.
The Thunder are a young team and adding a player like Kemba Walker for positions 1-2 would be a great move. In the last edition of the Draft the team took center Chet Holmgren, who they hope will be a sensation this year. They still need to beef up the shooting guard and point guard positions, and Walker is a good option for his price.
For several years the Dallas Mavericks have shown interest in Kemba Walker. In 2019 they were about to get his services and this seems like a good summer to get it. The Mavericks suffer with their second unit and the base would be an ideal replacement to rest the main figure of the team, Luka Doncic.
Kemba Walker has already lost his superstar status and would be closer to being a high-caliber backup. For the Memphis Grizzlies, it would be ideal for the four-time All-Star to be JA Morant’s bye option. The team seeks to strengthen its bench for the next NBA campaign.
