(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Im Soon-hyeon = The Korean women’s badminton team succeeded in advancing to the final of the World Team Badminton Championships for the first time in six years.

The national team defeated Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Women’s Team Badminton Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 13th (Korean time).

With this victory, the national team advanced to the finals for the first time in six years since the 2016 tournament, where they were runners-up.

In the first singles match, Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) opened the gates with a 2-1 (15-21 21-18 21-18) comeback victory against his archenemy Yamaguchi Akane.

After that, in the first match of doubles, Sohee Lee and Seungchan Shin (Incheon International Airport) won 2-0 (21-16 21-17) at Nami Matsuyama-Shida Jiaru and overpowered the baseline.

Then, Ga-eun Kim (Samsung Life Insurance) also defeated Nozomi Okuhara 2-1 (21-12 11-21 21-16) in two singles matches to confirm the advance to the finals.

The national team will face off against China, which defeated Thailand 3-0 in the semifinal at 3 pm on the 14th for the championship cup.

If China wins, the Korean women’s badminton will win the championship for the first time in 12 years after winning the 2010 tournament.

Meanwhile, the men’s national team failed to advance to the quarterfinals as they lost 2-3 in the quarterfinals of the World Men’s Team Badminton Championships against Denmark on the night of the 12th.

The World Women’s Team Badminton Championships and the World Men’s Team Badminton Championships are team events held every two years, called the Uber Cup and Thomas Cup, respectively.

In the 2020 tournament held in October last year in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the women’s team took third place, and the men’s team failed to advance to the quarterfinals.
