Via Europa League to the Champions League?

KThanks to miracles, that’s somehow what Eintracht has always been. Staying in the class in the heart-stopping final against Kaiserslautern, promotion in the header finish against Reutlingen, relegation success with the thrill in Nuremberg – and now this: final in the Europa League, the next cracker for the Hessians. Eintracht Frankfurt against Glasgow Rangers, tradition meets tradition.

It’s like a picture of the game – just like the Europa League is carved for Eintracht. Again and again on Thursdays this team unfolds its unbelievable potential. What has only been moderately successful in the Bundesliga this season, coach Oliver Glasner’s players manage with great regularity. Twelve games in Europe, not a single defeat: The fact that Eintracht is now really in the final in Seville on May 18 (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Europa League and on RTL) is more than deserved. It is the fruit of a great community effort.

FC Barcelona or West Ham United may also have some of the better individual players: this is not decisive. It is the team that counts and that has repeatedly managed in this outstanding campaign to explore the limits of their possibilities with will and power, heart and passion.

There are not many trophies in the club showcase in the Eintracht Museum. When the first and until today only coup in Europe succeeded, today’s players weren’t even born yet. 1980, two finals against Borussia Mönchengladbach: At that time it was Fred Schaub who, with his late goal, ensured the greatest success in the club’s history. This is how Eintracht got to the final

42 years later, the club, which has now grown to 100,000 members, has another great moment to write history. Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt?

The development in Europe in particular is breathtaking. Coach Oliver Glasner and sports director Markus Krösche have only been responsible for almost a year. Not every transfer has sat since then. And if the big hit in Seville really succeeds, the squad will have to be properly tinkered with in view of the Champions League.

Because it’s true: It’s almost always the same players who form the backbone of the starting eleven in this thrilling Europa League season. A strong community, strong enough to defy the big ones.

A lot has happened at the Club of Miracles. Around the turn of the millennium, when Jan-Aage Fjörtoft scored the no longer thought possible 5:1 against Lautern, only a few employees in a steel container took care of the administrative skills of the newly founded AG.

Today there are more than 300 employees working on the attractive professional campus. The long-sleeping giant Eintracht has long since awakened to new life. An amazing development that Glasner and his players can now crown in Seville.
