UANL judokas: to maintain hegemony

With the hope placed in a renewed team, the representative of the UANL of judo intends to achieve his seventeenth consecutive Championship.

Since 2004, the Tigres judo team of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) has not come down from the first place podium at the National Universiade (UN) by winning 16 consecutive Championships.

Leadership that the feline judokas will seek to endorse on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of this month of May during the start of the National Universiade UACJ (Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez) 2022, in Ciudad Juárez, and open the medal table for the UANL.

With all eyes on the auriazules, Tigres arrives as the rival to beat in the judo discipline with a renewed team, reported Everardo García Montelongo, who has been their coach since 1990.

During the time of pandemic and confinement, new generations of judokas emerged, so most of the Tigres UANL representative will be making their first UN appearance in Ciudad Juárez.

“The boys are very prepared. A few weekends ago we were in the pre-qualifying tournament in Oaxtepec, where we saw ourselves very well. We are a 90 percent new team, because of 27 competitors only five repeat from the previous generation,” he explained. Garcia Montelongo.

In the women’s branch, Tigres judo classified 15 women, while in the men’s they will participate with 12 members in a team that, in García Montelongo’s opinion, has everything to take the first places both in scoring and in the free and team tests.

“The expectations for us are always very high after 16 consecutive years winning the Universiade. We demand ourselves and the boys, with whom we share the experiences of the previous tournaments, as well as training sessions with former judo tigers,” he explained. Coach.

One of the keys for the felines to be the strongest rival lies in the love that their athletes feel for the institution and the Tigres jersey, highlighted García Montelongo, in addition to the follow-up that the institution makes of its athletes.

“These boys have been training since they were children. We have been observing them since middle school and already in high school we approached them. We try to create a culture of what they can do professionally,” he said.

Javier Padilla and Armando Molina, together with Everardo García Montelongo, form the team of Tigres judo coaches, who instill in students values such as respect, honor, mutual help, teamwork and a culture of human development.

Alicia Sanmiguel Pérez has practiced the discipline for six years, which in the last Universiade led her to win two golds and one silver, and Ciudad Juárez is the promised land.

“Since 2013 I have been in this exciting and contact sport, where various emotions are reflected on the tatami. I was very interested in the takedowns and that it is a contact sport.

“It has benefited me a lot mentally because to be in this sport you have to be very strong mentally and because in this sport you don’t always win, you have to overcome defeats. back down,” said the young student from the Faculty of Public Accounting and Administration.

For his part, Jeremy Yucristy Olivares Ramírez, a third-semester student at the School of Public Health and Nutrition, will participate in his first Universiade after having competed in different national and international events such as the Jr. Pan American Games, where he won the bronze medal. in judo

“During the pandemic I stayed active. Wherever I can I start training. I start doing physical exercises when judo cannot be practiced.

“I consider myself very persistent, I don’t give up, I don’t give up despite the circumstances. I try to keep going to reach my goal. It is quite difficult to combine study and sports, moving to the institution, I seek to accommodate my time as a student at the faculty “, commented the athlete.

For his part, Jorge Eduardo Pérez Rafful has just entered the Faculty of Public Accounting and Nutrition in August 2021, and has 11 years of experience practicing this discipline.

“Since I was eight years old I have been practicing judo and it has given me many facilities and opened doors in other places. Last year I attended a Pan American tour in Peru and Ecuador, winning first place in both. In the Youth Pan American Games I got third place .

“My goal is to go to the Universiade, win it and be able to attend the University World Cup. I trust my perseverance and dedication, and listen to my coach,” said Pérez Rafful. (UANL Press)
