Twilight of Czech stars? Plíšková and Kvitová collect defeats, they are not a threat to the elite

Their names still have a huge sound. The organizers still hear about the personality of the two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová or former world number one Karolína Plíšková. Finally, the native of Louny still holds a place in the elite ten, where she ranks seventh, and Kvitová then closes the third ten.

This year, however, both Czech legends are stumbled upon in the misery. At Karolína Plíšková, this was fundamentally affected by a broken arm, due to which she returned to the courts only at this year’s Indian Wells. And in the performances of the trustee Saschi Bajin, it was more than familiar. At Sunshine Double, as the pair of prestigious Florida battles in Indian Wells and Miami are called, they always ended up at the opening opponent.

She celebrated her first victory in Charleston against the Ukrainian Zavatská, the 215th player in the rankings, so that she immediately fell smoothly with Russia’s Alexandrovova. “Actually, not much tennis has been there on my part yet. But I believe that if I keep playing every week and play some more matches, it will improve,” Plíšková believed.

In her last tournament in Stuttgart, she first pushed Petra Kvitová in the first round and scored her second win of the year, in the second she was no chance against the Russian Samson.

The plight of the Queen of Wimbledon

While in Plíšková the poor results can be attributed to some extent to the lack of injuries, in Petra Kvitová the situation is significantly different. The Czech champion has managed to enter ten tournaments this year, the most successful being the competition in Miami so far, where she defeated three opponents and reached the quarterfinals.

However, this ends the list of successes of the former world number two. Jiří Vaňek’s charge managed two winning matches in a row only in Dubai, otherwise she ended up on the first or second opponent.

The saddest is the view of Petra Kvitová’s results in grand slams. Since the semi-final participation in the French Open in 2020, the third round has not passed, with one exception. This year’s Australian Open did not change anything either, where Romanian Cirstea showed the stop to the Czech star, winning twice twice 6: 2.

Kvitová clashed with tennis players from the top ten five times this year, lost four times (Jabeurová, Sakkariová, Swiateková, Plíšková), and scored the only victory over a member of the TOP 10 in Dubai against Sabalenková.
