“They roam the earth men who felt the blood of theirs flow through their veins warrior ancestors, They resumed the bow, the sword and the shield recalling ancient glorious deeds. They represent a bridge between past and future ». This sentence represents i composing the barbarian arrow, from the Latin «Freccia Barbara». An ASD affiliated to Uisp, which practices the archery.

Created in 1998 by the late Marco Maiolias 04 ARBO (field archers) within the Fiarc, Sagitta Barbarica was subsequently specialized in the study and faithful reproduction, in size and materialsof bows and arrows, studying archaeological finds and ancient iconography.

Although sports archery in its various forms is widespread almost everywhere in Italy, there are not many associations who have seriously developed a discipline that allows you to prove what it meant for our ancestors archery. «The main protagonist of the group’s activity is the figure of the archer and his weapons, in Europe, from the Second Iron Age to the Middle Ages, “he explains Franco Cappellopresident of Sagitta Barbarica (in the photo).

How the unusual is born passion to translate history, revive it and replace it with modernity? «Like all the boys of the past I grew up in the woods, having fun building bows with the woods available. Then I was lucky enough to get to know and deepen the knowledge of Gionata Brovelli (one of the leading experts in ancient archery) and from that day on I combine the study of the past with physical activity – replies Cappello – There is something ancestral in each of us, which continues to be a reminder. When you shoot an arrow, you immediately understand if it is destined to hit the target or not, it is a matter of intuition. These are difficult moments to explain in words, but they carry with them strong sensations and perceptions».

The Barbarian Arrow – i members are part of the Society of Archer-Antiquariesworldwide association of lovers of the history of archery – actively collaborates with anyone who wants to know the history of ancient archery, for example by activating workshops with school students and alsoand courses aimed at learning how to build the bow, arrows and ropes.
The association provides advice to museums. Currently, for example, Sagitta Barbarica is participating in a new project of the Pigorini Museum of Romein which materials documenting the cultures of all continents have been preserved.

In the group there are also several women passionate about weaving, who have specialized in the construction of trimmings with ancient techniques. Anyone interested in making a journey through time can start by browsing the site: www.sagittabarbarica.org.
