Puerto Rican Students Arrive in Orlando to Compete in Basketball Tournament – ​​NBC Puerto Rico

The champion women’s and men’s basketball teams of the School Sports Program of the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD), Colegio Católico San Antonio de Guayama and Colegio San Benito de Mayagüez, respectively, are already in Orlando, Florida to participate in the AAU Tournament Memorial Day Classic on ESPN Wide World of Sports May 28-30.

“We remain committed to exposing the talent of our student athletes. School Sports represents that opportunity so that they can be seen both locally and internationally and serve as a stepping stone to get academic offers. We know that it is a great experience for them and that they will make the most of it,” said DRD Secretary Ray J. Quiñones Vázquez.

During the tournament, the San Benito team will take on The Academy Elite, Chasing Success Elite, Lake Nona Kings 18U, Chobee Nation, and the FSA Elite Gilas. For its part, the San Antonio team will have to face Jupiter Jaguars Girls 11th, East Coast United Titans, Aguada Puerto Rico, Space Coast Fury 2023, GA Pistols Purple 2023, Wellington Wolves 2023, Chobee Nation and TNBA South.

For Nick Lucena, captain of the Colegio San Benito team, it is the second time he travels thanks to the School Sports Program, being the first time with the Volleyball team. “I was already able to live this experience with the volleyball team. So I know it will be of great benefit to my peers. School Sports has opened many doors for me. It has put me in the eye of many universities both in Puerto Rico and in the United States. Grateful to God and to the teammates that we were able to win the championship. Now make the most of the opportunity that the DRD has given us and enjoy the moment”.

For her part, Jelenie M. Pérez, captain of the San Antonio team, mentions how school sports have helped her to trust her and her team more. “School Sports has helped me grow as a person, to trust myself and my players more. We have very high expectations with this tournament. We are going to put into practice everything we have learned throughout the year while having fun”.
