Manchester City are looking to defend their Premier League title. A day after Liverpool FC’s blunder, the Citizens celebrated a smashing win against Newcastle. The final phase of the game should have meant the preliminary decision in the championship fight.
Dhat it should have been for Liverpool FC’s title hopes. Manchester City made impressive use of the mistake made by Jürgen Klopp’s team and extended their lead in the Premier League with a resounding victory.
The defending champion won his home game against Newcastle United 5-0 (2-0) on Sunday. Raheem Sterling (19th minute/90+3) with a brace, as well as Aymeric Laporte (38′), Rodrigo (61′) and Phil Foden (90′) scored the goals for Pep Guardiola’s team.
After the late exit from the Champions League at Real Madrid, the Spanish coach had changed his starting XI to four positions. Oleksandr Zinchenko, İlkay Gündoğan, Sterling and Jack Grealish came on for Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden.
The goal difference also speaks for Manchester
As a result of the success, Manchester City is now three points ahead of pursuers Liverpool after 35 match days in the English football championship. The day before, coach Jürgen Klopp’s Champions League finalist had only drawn 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur despite constant pressure and dominance.
The amount of City’s victory could prove to be particularly bitter for the Reds. Liverpool now also have the worse goal difference than their competitor. City are on 68 with three games to go, Liverpool stayed at 64. A blunder by the Skyblues could even be too little.
With the championship, Manchester would win the fight for a total of four trophies at least in one competition. In the League Cup, Pep Guardiola’s team had to give way to Liverpool, and in the FA Cup the light blues were also defeated by the Reds in the semi-finals. In the premier class, Klopp and his team are in the final, City missed the direct duel due to the elimination in Madrid.
