Premier League, 36th day – Liverpool hooked by Tottenham (1-1), City can strike a blow on Sunday

Liverpool could bite their fingers. This Saturday evening, the Reds snatched the point of the draw against Tottenham (1-1), during the 36th day of the Premier League. At Anfield, the equalizer from Luis Diaz (74th) responded to the opener from Heung-Min Son (56th).

With this point, and thanks to a better goal difference, Jürgen Klopp’s men take the lead in the English championship standings, with the same number of points as Manchester City (83), who could take three lengths in advance, in case of success against Newcastle, this Sunday (5:30 p.m.). For their part, Spurs remain fifth, one point behind the Champions League and fourth place behind Arsenal.

City or Liverpool? The title race explained

Only Chelsea, Manchester City and Brighton had taken points at Anfield, in the league, since the start of the season. Tottenham is therefore added to the list, while Liverpool nevertheless remained on twelve victories in a row in its den, in the elite. The Reds quickly rushed forward from the start of the game. Jürgen Klopp’s men multiplied the strikes (22 against 8), as did the waste in front of goal and in their centers, since out of thirty attempted, barely five were successful.

The achievement was with Diaz on his equalizer

When Luis Diaz finally managed to equalize, with a long shot from the right foot, he showed success by taking advantage of the deflection of Rodrigo Bentancur, who took Hugo Lloris on the wrong foot (74th, 1-1). The only shot on target from the Mersey club, in the second act. The first since that of Diaz (42nd), while at the start of the meeting, Sadio Mané had also requested the French international goalkeeper (3rd). Jürgen Klopp’s men dominated this meeting (65% possession), but they also exposed themselves.

Tottenham notably proceeded in counterattacks. Which even ended up being fatal for Liverpool. On a school goal, with Hugo Lloris as the first raiser, the Spurs had therefore been the first to find the fault, through Heung-Min Son, who only had to conclude, closely and left foot (56th, 0-1). The South Korean has both scored (12) and been involved in (17) more Premier League goals than any other player in 2022. Rodrigo Bentancur (7th) and Dejan Kulusevski (60th) also had the opportunity to shine, while the post of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (42nd) responded to the bar found by Virgil van Dijk (39th).

If Tottenham will monitor the result of Arsenal, which hosts Leeds (Sunday, 3 p.m.), the Reds will do the same with the Skyblues. But Manchester City now know what they have to do to get a little closer to a new title.
