Eintracht Frankfurt are European Cup winners – and the fans can’t wait for their heroes to return from Seville. Follow live when the team arrives and the city on the Main becomes Germany’s biggest fan party.

They did it: In the Europa League final on Wednesday evening, Eintracht Frankfurt triumphed 5-4 on penalties against Glasgow Rangers. For the club it is only the second international title and at the same time the first entry into the premier class. At the lavish victory party in a posh club in Seville, even the otherwise quiet successful coach Oliver Glasner mutated into a party beast. “I’ll let the pig out and party until Saturday – and on Sunday I’ll go on vacation,” announced the 47-year-old football teacher, who was completely soaked from a beer shower by his protégés.

State of emergency also in the city on the Main. Like the players, tens of thousands of fans turned night into day and exuberantly celebrated the cup victory. All attention is now focused on Thursday evening, when the homecoming of the “Heroes of Seville” is expected around 6 p.m.

Eintracht Frankfurt celebrates a football fairy tale

After winning the UEFA Cup 42 years ago, the Eintracht pros felt like they were in a fairy tale after winning the second international title in the club’s history – in addition to the massive trophy, they also secured their first participation in the Champions League. A sporting and financial quantum leap for the traditional club, which a few years ago was called the “moody diva of the Main”. “It will take a few years before you realize the consequences,” said captain Sebastian Rode, who suffered a head wound. And Kevin Trapp emphasized: “We have always looked for superlatives, but there is simply no word to describe it.”

The national goalkeeper was one of the heroes of the dramatic final. The 31-year-old first saved his team with a monster save just before the end of extra time in the penalty shoot-out, where he then saved Aaron Ramsey’s attempt. “The boys came up to me and said, ‘You get us this thing!’ You can’t train the tension that is there at this moment. I’m proud that I was able to contribute to it, “Trapp described the nerve duel from the point. Thanks to his feat, Frankfurt won the final 5-4 on penalties.

Praise from Hansi Flick and Chancellor Olaf Scholz

An extra praise came from national coach Hansi Flick. He is particularly happy for Trapp, “who made a significant contribution to winning this title and was a sure support for his team throughout the season, but also a driver and motivator,” said Flick.

And the Federal Chancellor himself congratulated him on the title. “Congratulations, @Eintracht! What a great success, we are all happy with you about the European Cup victory!”, It said on Thursday at the Twitter channel of Olaf Scholz.
