Larbi Benboudaoud, high performance director of French judo: “It’s a fair return to be present here” in Auxerre

I was passing through the region and the president of the club Nassar Elassri is a friend. In our pyramid system, I’m all the way up there, but it’s important to get back to basics. Clubs like AuxR Judo provide our teams. For me, it’s a fair return to be present here.

For you who come from the bottom of the ladder, is it important to show your interest in clubs like Auxr Judo?

Admittedly, we have great champions in France, but what makes us strong are our educational values. And where do we learn these values? Basically. All the great champions we have, a Teddy Riner, a Clarisse Agbegnenou, they started with a small room, perhaps smaller than this one, with a judo teacher who welcomes them and transmits values to them.

Judo is a good school of life. Even if young people don’t become champions, the goal is to be a champion in life. It is not given to everyone to be efficient in the act of doing judo, but to be efficient in your head, it is possible.

How do you feel in your duties as Director of High Performance taken before the Tokyo Olympics?

I learn every day. There is still a good goal in sight with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. And at the same time, it’s not just Paris 2024. It’s obviously an important deadline, it’s going to happen quickly, but we have to already working for future deadlines. We try to make the right decisions to reap the fruits of our labor as soon as possible in Paris. If they are good, and time will tell, future generations will be able to benefit from them.

More than a year after taking office, do you think the work is starting to pay off?

Among the girls, things are rolling, we try to stay the course. It’s so natural that people think that today medals are given to us. So no, we have to keep looking for them. Boys, it’s a little more complicated, but we try to start something with Teddy as the spearhead. We have a good school in France, structures, a sector, an exceptional network in the territory. We will continue to do our job of training, detection and support for high-level performance.

premium Olympic flame, preparation centres, young volunteers… The road to the Games will pass through Yonne

What are your current priorities?

We have a goal for this season, it’s the World Championships in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), from October 6, 2022 to October 13, 2022. After that, the big goal in sight is still the Olympic Games. Otherwise, we are in full reform of the sector of access to the high level. I started a tour in the poles of all regions and then we will see how we can do to be as efficient as possible to prepare for after 2024.
