Julian Nagelsmann reprimands Bayern Munich after Mainz bankruptcy

JUlian Nagelsmann didn’t want to hide his anger at the lackluster performance of the not at all masterful Bayern pros in game one after successfully defending the title. Visibly frustrated, the coach of the record champions from Munich indirectly asked the question of character after the 1: 3 (1: 2) at FSV Mainz 05 and called for a personnel and structural inventory during the summer break.

“When it seems like we have to do some service and there is no passion, that’s the point where we need to change something. That’s where we are right now,” said the 34-year-old, adding: “If you keep winning champions ten years in a row, there comes a time when you say we have to do things differently now. I want us to continue on the path successfully and not at some point say, shit, we missed the point.”

National player Joshua Kimmich also sees an increased need for talks and action with Bayern, who failed early in the DFB Cup and in the Champions League and who disappointed again in Mainz. “The performance should make us think. Of course we became German champions last week. Nevertheless, that happened to us far too often this season,” said the midfielder and demanded: “We have to analyze that very clearly so that it doesn’t happen again in the next two games and especially next season.”

“I will not tell”

With their bloodless performance, the highly paid Munich star selection in front of 33,305 spectators in the sold-out Mainz Arena was just as puzzling as their coach in the subsequent analysis. “I have an explanation, but I’m not giving it to you. It’s nothing for the media world,” Nagelsmann dictated to the journalists after the final whistle. He only wanted to talk to the team internally about the reasons. The Bayern coach was similarly mysterious in relation to his plans for the future: “There are already approaches to change, but I won’t reveal them.”

The performance on Saturday reinforced the impression of the past few weeks that Bayern sometimes have a mentality problem. Bochum, Salzburg, Villarreal and now Mainz – the list of poor performances this year is long. “I think we always need a certain core passion in the game. We didn’t have that today. That’s a bit human if you’ve just become a master. But we still wear the Bayern logo on our chests,” Nagelsmann criticized his protégés and emphasized: “There are too many defeats of this kind.”

The fifth bankruptcy of the season in the Bundesliga – there were so many for the Munich team seven years ago – could have been even higher. The superior team from Mainz, for whom Jonathan Burkardt, Moussa Niakhaté and Leandro Barreiro were successful, only hit the woodwork three times. “We can’t get nine hundred percent chances against us, that just doesn’t work,” Nagelsmann complained about the poor defensive behavior. 22:7 shots on goal for the hosts showed the balance at the end. Bayern last allowed that many five years ago in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

Robert Lewandowski’s 34th goal of the season was not enough because Bayern lacked passion and emotion. “I also saw players who really wanted to win. But it was a bit fewer than at Mainz, ”analyzed Nagelsmann. This should not be repeated in the final games of the season. “Basically, my aim is to win,” said the Munich champion coach. “We also communicate that in the team.”

Hertha coach Felix Magath is concerned about the consequences for the relegation battle after FC Bayern’s poor performance. “FC Bayern are already champions, but I don’t know why a team stops playing three weeks before the end of the season. That doesn’t serve the Bundesliga,” Magath said after his Berliners’ 1-1 draw at Arminia Bielefeld on Sky. Bayern will play against VfB Stuttgart next Sunday – one of Hertha’s competitors in the bottom of the table.

He “didn’t see the Bayern game and only knew the result from Mainz,” said the 68-year-old, who once won the double twice with Bayern. The Berliners play against Mainz on Saturday, with a win Hertha would definitely be saved. Bayern coach Nagelsmann reacted to Magath’s statements on Saturday. “Very clever of him, I don’t think he’ll do it entirely unselfishly,” said the 34-year-old after the game in Mainz. “But he should watch the game and then he can call me. I’m not talking about Hertha’s performance either.”

According to media reports, some stars of FC Bayern Munich are now using the days off for a short trip. A large part of the team is said to have flown to Ibiza. Nagelsmann had given his players Sunday and Monday free. The “Bild” newspaper first reported on the short vacation. According to the report, club bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic allowed the trip.

Training for the series champion is on Tuesday again. There was initially no reaction from FC Bayern. “It doesn’t fit at all, especially after a game like this,” criticized record national player Lothar Matthäus on Sky. “As Julian Nagelsmann, I would also take tougher action: the days off are canceled after a game like this.”

A good week ago, the people of Munich had made the tenth German football championship in a row perfect. FC Bayern will receive the championship trophy on the penultimate day of this Bundesliga season. Captain Manuel Neuer will receive the trophy on May 8 after the home game against VfB Stuttgart from the new DFL Managing Director Donata Hopfen in the Allianz Arena. On the last day of the game, coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team will be visiting VfL Wolfsburg.
