TThe Czech Republic has reached the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland. The twelve-time world champions beat the USA 1-0 (1-0, 0-0, 0-0) in Group B in Tampere and are now the third team in the group after Olympic champions Finland and eleven-time title holders Sweden Eight.
Denmark, tenth in the world rankings, surprisingly won Group A 3-2 (2-0, 0-1, 1-1) against defending champions and record world champions Canada, who, like Germany and Switzerland, had previously qualified for the round of eight. On Tuesday (3.20 p.m.) the Danes now need one point, i.e. a defeat after extra time, in a direct duel against Slovakia to progress. With a win on Tuesday (11.20 a.m. / Sport1 and Mangentasport) against leaders Switzerland, Germany can even move into the round of the last eight as a group winner for the first time in history.
One point is enough for USA, third in the World Cup, in the last group game on Tuesday (3:20 p.m.) against Norway to progress fourth. Otherwise, Latvia could overtake the Americans with a win over Sweden on Tuesday.
Hungary and Slovenia rise
Italy and Great Britain, on the other hand, have been relegated to the 85th title fight. The world number 16. Italy lost the head-to-head duel in Group A with previously pointless Kazakhstan 2-5 (1-2, 1-1, 0-2) and will have to fight for promotion in Division I next year. Great Britain lost 5-3 (1-0, 1-0, 1-5) to Austria after a two-goal lead in Tampere.
Slovenia and Hungary have already been confirmed as climbers from Division I. It is still unclear how Russia and Belarus will be dealt with, who were excluded from the World Cup because of the aggressive war against Ukraine. A decision by the World Federation IIHF is still pending. The 16 places in the top division are completely taken by the two climbers.
