‘Inexcusable, unacceptable, embarrassing’: Hopp’s reckoning after season finale

Dietmar Hopp sharply criticized the TSG Hoffenheim team after the disappointing end to the season. He also has “no doubts” about the decision to part with coach Sebastian Hoeneß.

At the general meeting of TSG Hoffenheim, Hopp went into the last third of the Kraichgauer season and left no good hair on the team. “The 0-0 against Fürth, that was inexcusable. The last three games were unacceptable, the 1:5 in Mönchengladbach even embarrassing,” said the 82-year-old at the event on Saturday in the Sinsheim stadium.

TSG ended the season nine games in a row without a win and in ninth place, thus failing to qualify for European competitions. Hoffenheim had even dreamed of participating in the Champions League for several weeks. The missed Europa League participation would cost the club around 20 million euros, the missed leap into the Champions League “much, much more”. That’s one of the reasons why TSG parted ways with head coach Hoeneß. “I think there is no doubt that we had to take action on the coaching position and beyond,” Hopp defended the separation.

I maintain that we have the potential to be among the top six teams in the league.

The SAP co-founder is the majority owner of Hoffenheimer Fußball-Spielbetriebs GmbH and had declared last fall that TSG would have to play for the international ranks in the Bundesliga on a permanent basis. “I stand by the fact that we have the potential to be among the top six teams in the league,” emphasized Hopp again.

Since the performance of the junior team does not meet the requirements of those responsible, according to Hopp there should be a new offensive in the search for talent.
