Hanover 96: To Schott Mainz. Almost a bye in the DFB Cup – 2nd Bundesliga

It doesn’t get much easier!

Dusel-Los for Hannover 96 in the first round of the cup. In the draw, world champion Kevin Großkreutz sent 96 into the 5th league. The opponent is Schott Mainz, who have just been relegated to the Oberliga from the regional league.

Bye! Only the journey is long…

From the 96 Arena at Maschsee to the Mainz-Mombach district sports facility, where Schott plays its home games, it is almost 400 kilometers via the A7 and A5. That can take up to six hours by bus.

Sports director Marcus Mann (38) is still very satisfied: “I know Schott Mainz from my time in Saarbrücken and Hoffenheim. But of course: For us, the only thing that counts is getting ahead. Last season, the DFB Cup was a nice journey that was a lot of fun.”

Last season, the Reds started 4-0 in Norderstedt (Regionalliga) and did not get as far as they had in 15 years. After two 3-0 victories against Dusseldorf and Gladbach, the final stop was in the quarter-finals against eventual cup winners RB Leipzig (0-4).

The new trainer Stefan Leitl didn’t get that far with Fürth and was eliminated in the first round – 6:7 penalties at regional league team Babelsberg. Will hardly happen to him now with the Reds – with the bye Schott Mainz.

The top hits of the first round: Braunschweig – Hertha, Viktoria Cologne – Bavaria, Lautern – Freiburg, Dresden – Stuttgart. The first round of the cup will be played from July 29th to August 1st.
