Fellow Messi refused to play in rainbow jersey! – Football

Excitement at Paris Saint-Germain about Idrissa Gueye (32).

The midfielder has on the last day of the Ligue 1 not played for the Parisians for “personal reasons”. He watched his team’s 4-0 win in Montpellier from the stands.

So far nothing unusual. Nonetheless, his behavior is making waves in France. Because the 37th match day was all about the fight against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. For this, all teams flocked the jersey number in the colors of the rainbow. The captain’s armbands were also colorful. Of course also at PSG.

“On World Day Against Homophobia, our kits will feature the rainbow flag, a symbol of peace and diversity in the LGBT movement,” the club said at the launch of the matchday kit.

Diversity doesn’t seem to be the issue for Gueye. According to “RMC Sport”, he is said to have refused to wear the “rainbow” jersey. “He was absent for personal reasons. He wasn’t injured,” explained PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino after the game.

Other media pointed out that he had already missed this symbolic matchday last season. His reason at the time: stomach problems.

Gueye is apparently a devout Muslim. In some Muslim countries, homosexuality is subject to severe penalties. In Gueye’s home country of Senegal, homosexuality can be jailed for up to five years. Same-sex marriage is illegal.
