Family man Hein Vanhaezebrouck: “Abroad was not an issue, my son is going to university” | Jupiler Pro League

Hein Vanhaezebrouck and AA Gent will continue together for 2 years longer. “It was clear to me: Ghent was the option in Belgium,” he says in Extra Time.

“There were also options for a job abroad, but that has not yet been discussed. Because my son will start university next year.”

“It took a while with Ghent, because I wanted to get some answers and see some action.”

“I also wanted to know what plans the chairman and manager had for the club. Were they going to stop? Are they going to sell? In the end they decided to stay at the helm for a while.”

AA Gent missed out on a ticket for the Champions’ Play-offs. Nevertheless, the ambitious club can look back on a successful season.

“I think so,” adds Hein Vanhaezebrouck. “Winning the cup is always fun.”

“We could have done better in Europe, but that campaign overlapped with our goals in the league and the cup. It all happened at the same time and we didn’t have the widest core. That was tough for the boys.”

“That’s why I also changed my 3 most important players against PAOK. With a view to the coming matches.”

Participation in Play-off I just doesn’t work. “We threw away way too many points for New Years. We were often boss, but we didn’t capitalize on the opportunities”, Vanhaezebrouck is looking for an explanation.

“We could have gotten a few players with some extra resources in January. Then there would be no discussion about Play-off I.”

“Although our final sprint remains incredible. You don’t do that every year”, the coach also realizes.
