Diane Parry eliminated by Sloane Stephens in the third round of Roland-Garros

Diane Parry leaves Paris and by the Porte d’Auteuil on a match that will leave her with regrets, where she will never have found the right formula to hinder Sloane Stephens, victorious in two sets (6-2, 6-3). The American, down to 64th in the world, but much more experienced, since she has already won a grand slam, the US Open in 2017, will have been a metronomic opponent and much fairer in her choices.

Parry, she has always put herself in danger on her service games: almost every time, she had to defend break points, and only won one of her engagements without being exposed to it. Above all, Parry seemed eager at the trade. She most often took the initiative, but, pushed further by a catchy Stephens, she ended up squandering her chances far too often.

The match interrupted ten minutes by the discomfort of a spectator

His service game to stay in the match, at the end of the second set, the one interrupted for ten minutes by the discomfort of a spectator, quickly taken care of by the emergency services, was a perfect illustration of this. She sent three unforced forehand errors there, one which offered the first match point to the finalist of Roland 2018 (well saved by the French, angry in defense), and two on advantages for her.

The break made by Parry on the following game, to come back to 3-5 and put the pressure on Stephens, was also marred by the same evil: on her next face-off, the 19-year-old Frenchwoman fell back into her ways to offer three new match points to the American. And after two saves, she suffered yet another setback, which put an end to her adventure at home.

Stephens was serious without needing to shine. She intelligently served on the backhand of the Frenchwoman, who she put in difficulty with her power, but without abusing it, and always chose her moments wisely. In the end, Parry could not rely on his forehand, committed too many unforced errors (36), was broken five times. It was too much to pass this third round. But the Frenchwoman can be satisfied with having achieved her best result in a Grand Slam, and having beaten the defending champion, the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, in the first round.

In the round of 16, Stephens will face the Swiss Jil Teichmann.
