DFB Cup – lucky draw for St. Pauli and HSV, cracker at Teutonia – 2nd Bundesliga

Solvable tasks for the pros, games with a guaranteed full hut for the amateurs. Ex-professional Kevin Großkreutz (33) had a good hand for the draws of the north clubs in the 1st round of the DFB Cup (July 29th to August 1st).

regional league Teutonia 05 allowed against defending champion RB Leipzig (30/31 August) ran. Teutonia’s new coach David Bergner, who worked for RB’s youth team for two years and has been at home in Leipzig since 1999: “It will be an absolutely sensational challenge. Against the reigning cup winners, who also come from the city where I live. I had secretly thought beforehand that this would be a cool lottery ticket. We want to put together a powerful team for next season. This game will certainly also help us with player acquisition.”

In the Baltic Sea derby, the VfB Luebeck the second division Hansa Rostock. Most recently, the teams met in 2020/21 (1:0, 1:1) in the 3rd division. VfB coach Lukas Pfeiffer: “It’s a huge club. Our fans are hot, the Rostockers will come with a lot of people. That guarantees us a full hut and will be a cool backdrop. The second division are clear, but we’re not doing a friendly there. On a good day we calculate something. In the 3rd division (2020/21 season, ed.) they lost 1-0 to us.”

For cup semi-finalist HSV it’s off to the third division promoted SpVgg Bayreuth to Bavaria – definitely with the risk of stumbling. Coach Tim Walter: “The cup is a very special competition with a very special appeal. We experienced that several times last season.”

The supposedly easiest lot caught the FC St. Pauli with the fourth division and Niederrhein Cup winner SV Straelen from near the German-Dutch border.

Sport boss Andreas Bornemann: “We are looking forward to the new cup season and the game against SV Straelen. In the regional league they had to fight to stay up in the league, in the state cup they finally beat league rivals and third-placed Wuppertaler SV. Nevertheless, we have the right to reach the next round.”

It will be the hardest for Holstein Kiel at the third division SVW Mannheim. They threw out Europa League champion Eintracht Frankfurt last season and went on penalties against Union Berlin. Holstein coach Marcel Rapp (from Pforzheim): “A very exciting draw where everyone knows immediately what’s going on. A cool stadium, cool spectators, for me in my supposedly old home. I’m very happy about that. We are keen to write our own story, especially in the cup.”
