It seemed that the sabalero had decided (actually he was showing it) to go out and “eat” Olimpia from the beginning, exciting the thousands of sabaleros in the cold Santa Fe night, but that attitude had an unexpected blow.
After seven minutes, in a deadly counterattack, Olimpia’s goal came. Quintana was the one who beat Burián, but the play began with a double error by Goltz trying to mark Derlis González and a bad setback by the Sabalera defense. González, after quickly leaving the experienced colonist defender on the road, enabled Quintana who came through the middle and beat “Cachorro” without problems.
The goal disconcerted Colón, a state that lasted a couple of minutes, in which Burián, the last line and the local public suffered more than necessary.
In any case, “Pelusa” Falcioni’s team managed to take the reins of the game again to squeeze and disturb Olimpia’s defense, with Aliendro, Bernardi, Farías, Teuten, Lértora and Beltrán leading the red and black team.
The clearest chance to equalize the score came after half an hour of play, when after the “umpteenth” corner for the local team (the first from Teuten from the left), Lértora connected the header to the ground that hit the base of the pipe right and went outside.
At that point, Colón already long deserved the draw. And when it seemed that the first period ended 1-0 in favor of the visit, what the red and black team deserved so much and also the author of the equalizing goal arrived.
At 42 minutes, after a very good play started by Delgado for Aliendro, the “Black”, first, enabled Bernardi, who when he reached the bottom, from the left, sent the center back and found the foot “open” de Lértora, sending the ball into the back of the net after “dodging” several opposing legs.
1-1 the initial stage and another match began. Or it seemed that this was going to happen, because in reality it followed the same trend. Colón looking to unbalance from the beginning, something logical due to the local need to finish the first phase in Uruguay against Peñarol with the peace of mind of being classified.
He was very close to achieving it as soon as he started the plugin. After six minutes, Beltrán again, who was not fine when it came to defining, faced the rival goalkeeper hand in hand after Meza’s great “long pass”, but the striker kicked well above the crossbar.
That of the attacking Cordovan who will almost certainly return to River in the middle of the year, was the last outstanding play until the 39th minute of the second period.
A new corner kick, this time from the right, executed by Bernardi, was “combed” by Goltz at the near post, and on the way, the ball found the head of “Lion” Lértora, who accommodated it next to the vertical right de Olveira to make it 2-1, a result with which the result was sealed.
The three points added against the Paraguayan team finally gave Colón the peace of mind to go to Montevideo next week, more precisely on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., to visit Peñarol, knowing that he is already among the best 16 teams in South America, and if he beats “Carbonero” he will finish in first place in Group G, with all the advantages that this means for the future.
The sabalero fan, who came by the thousands to Brigadier López, being a cold Wednesday night, ended up celebrating with such heat that it seemed to be “Saturday night fever”, and the person most responsible was Federico Lértora.
