You wanna play catch with me? This is the question that children have been asking for a century and a half in all the courtyards and pitches of America. As we say “Shall we do two shots?”. We could translate it like this. Only on this side of the Atlantic it is less familiar, certainly more difficult. And so if you are wondering, you might find yourself a little confused. Especially if you were born in Monte Carlo, where baseball is not a fundamental interest. Yesterday it happened to Charles Leclerc, visiting the Miami Marlins, an MLB team.

promotion

Formula 1 is promoting its first time ever in Miami, next weekend’s GP. And so yesterday Charles went to the stadium for the local baseball team, currently second in the National League East. Moreover, on a historic day: yesterday, for the first time ever, the four teams from New York and Los Angeles in an unprecedented juncture, namely: Yankees and Angels, Mets and Dodgers. So before the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Avisail Garcia, right fielder, Venezuelan, asked Leclerc that question.

Jersey exchange

Charles made the best of a bad situation. “It’s my first experience,” he replied shyly. The images for a moment betrayed the mistake of those who have never seen a glove in his life. Leclerc is right and made to put it in his right hand. But it doesn’t work like this: right-handers use the glove with their left hand, the right is used to throw. It takes a moment. On the launch, Leclerc didn’t even do badly, the problem was the grip. But patience, the spirit was there. Then the Principino, a little bewildered, exchanged a red Ferrari jersey for number 16 with Jazz Chisholm, the team’s second baseman. Chosen because he is passionate about Formula 1, and perhaps because he is formally European: born in the Bahamas, he plays for the Great Britain national team.

unfortunate marlins

Then it was played. The warm-up with the Ferrari man did well for Chisholm who beat two hits and took home 2 of the 4 points of the Marlins. Less to Garcia that in batting he closed at 0 out of 4 with 2 strike outs suffered. And especially not to the Marlins who lost 4-5. Neither Chisholm nor anyone else on the team will be at the GP this weekend: they will be away to San Diego against the Padres.
